Webinar #1 - February 17

Creating the Context for Successful Change

 

Everything happens within a context. The best context for major school improvement projects to be successfully launched is a “purposeful community.” McREL defines Purposeful Community as “a community with the collective efficacy and capability to develop and use assets to accomplish purpose and produce outcomes that matter to all community members through agreed-upon processes.” During this webinar principals and leadership teams will use a survey tool to assess the degree to which their current school community is a purposeful community. They will experience tools and protocols to increase purposeful community in their school communities as they plan to initiate major school improvement efforts. The webinar will explore, in depth, the 8 school-level leadership responsibilities associated with creating a purposeful community that were identified through McREL’s research on what school leaders do that positively impacts student achievement. These leadership responsibilities include affirmation, communication, culture, ideals/beliefs, input, relationships, situational awareness and visibility.

Empowering School Staffs to Improve Student Learning Through Collective Efficacy

Collective efficacy is one of the 4 characteristics of a Purposeful Community. Roger Goddard, researcher at the University of Texas,(2001) says, “ For schools, collective efficacy refers to the perceptions of teachers in a school that the faculty as a whole can execute the courses of action necessary to have positive effects on student achievement.” During this webinar participants will learn how collective efficacy is a stronger predictor of student success than race or socio-economic status and they will learn how to develop and increase the sense of collective efficacy among staff in their schools.

Webinar #3 - March 10

Understanding Change

Participants will learn about the 4 phases of change and the difference between first and second order change. This webinar will explore, in depth, the 7 leadership responsibilities identified through McREL’s research on what effective school leaders do to positively impact student achievement. These leadership responsibilities include ideals/beliefs, intellectual stimulation, change agent, knowledge of curriculum, instruction & assessment, optimize, monitor/evaluate, and flexibility. Participants will use the Planning a Change Initiative tool to prepare to lead a school improvement initiative in their schools.

Webinar #4 - March 17

Successfully Leading Second-order Change Initiatives

Most of the school improvement projects underway in schools involve changes that have second-order implications for students, parents, communities and staff members. This webinar will focus on leading staff and community through second-order, or major, change. Based on the work of William Bridges, participants will learn how to assist others through the transition a major change entails. Participants will learn about the 4 school-level leadership responsibilities that are negatively impacted by changes with second order implications identified through McREL’s research on what effective school leaders do to improve student achievement. These leadership responsibilities include culture, communication, order and input. Participants will learn how to insure that the new beginning an improvement initiative represents is successful for everyone. Successful change requires that everyone in the school community understands the Purpose of the change, see themselves in the Picture, know the Plan and have a Part in the new beginning.
