In order to maximize and extend the use of the sessions submitted for the Festival of Ideas during the 2010 Alaska School Leadership Institute, we propose “mining” the submissions to identify specific ideas for further development. 

 

Some of these ideas could be featured in monthly podcast interviews, integrated into proposed webinars, or developed as comprehensive case studies including expanded descriptions, interviews, artifacts, and other pertinent materials.  

We proposed that the Management Group work in teams of three and use the FOI rubric to assess the potential of the submissions for further development.

Scoring Rubric

Please use the following scale to score each submission from the Festival of Ideas from ASLI 2010: 

1 = Poor     2 = Fair      3 = Good     4 = Outstanding

1.  Alignment with specific practices from the self-study domains.      (Curriculum, Assessment, Instruction, Supportive Learning           Environment, Professional Development, Leadership)
2.  Clarity of description of emerging best practices.      (Rich description of the practice including key elements and a       discussion of how the practice evolved)
3.  Strength of evidence of impact.      (Demonstration of impact on school, staff, and/or students)
4.  Substantive description of key leadership supports.      (Detailing of specific leadership actions that supported the       implementation of the emerging best practice)
5.  Coherent summary of key lessons learned.      (Reflection that highlights key lessons learned)
6.  Overall potential for further development      (Foundation of ideas that could be expanded and developed)
7.  Potential contribution to the field as an Alaskan Rural Practice      (Transportability of the idea to other rural Alaskan contexts)

Each team will review about 10 proposals thereby dividing-up the work across the entire Management Group.  Proposals will be reviewed blindly with Kathy Blanc coordinating the overall team formation, reading assignments, and scoring compilation. 

 

The Management Group should seek to complete their reviews by October 18, 2010.

Ensuring follow-up from the 2010 Festival of Ideas should help “set the table” for a repeat of the Festival of Ideas at the 2011 Institute program.  More entries should be sought on best practices associated with the native cultural aspects of working in Alaska’s rural schools.  Specific help from EED and project partners should help to bolster this aspect of the Festival of Ideas.
