UAA Ed Leadership Program Role

At least 55 scholarships will be extended to aspiring prinicipals in rural Alaskan schools over five years.  We will accept up to 20 as part of the first cohort that starts this summer.

Grant will pay for:

  • 6 credit hours  (Summer Institute)  Grant also pays for Summer Institute Housing, but not per diem or travel
  • 3 credit hours fall semester
  • 3 credit hours spring semester

Structure at UAA:

Students needing a Masters degree require 36 hours of study - broken into 3, 12-hour blocks

  • 12 core classes (4 theory, applied theory)
  • 12 internship/seminar
  • 6 research/6 educational electives

If students have a Masters but need a Type B there is a 24 hour program that yields a graduate certificate for principal

  • 12 core classes
  • 12 internship/seminar credits

To qualify students must have taught one year before entering, and have an Alaska teaching certificate.  They must have taught for three years by the time they are certified as a principal.

If you have staff that are currently in the UAA program  we will try and get them to begin their internship in Fall 2009.  They can come to summer insitute (6 credits) - that will launch their internship in the Fall  - and they could complete in May of 2009 (a year and 2 summer institutes).

The first onsite grant event is the 2009 Summer Institute in Anchorage.  The Institute will run for 4-days at the BP Center, starting  the day after Memorial Day  - May 26-29 (Tuesday- Friday).  Housing will be available at UAA at no cost, however the grant does not cover travel or per diem.

We are exploring doing a strand for districts in corrective action at this institute - that is the way to bring all state-wide resources together at the same time. Summer institute partcipants will have advantage of seeing us all work together to coordinate resources EED, UAA, ASDN, AACP.

The RAPPS program will have a mix of people/experience levels. It all begins with the Summer Insitute - we can accomodate students in any stage of the program.

Timing for Nominations - we do not have enough yet to fill the cohort, so will continue to work with districts, although the deadline was 11/21 for nominations.  The early deadline was developed because it takes time to get people admitted at UAA (transcripts etc) and we want to have them admitted by January.

Susan will contact each student nominated within a week - and will walk them throught the paperwork.

Districts are encouraged to cover costs for UAA program participants to travel to the May 26-29 Institute.  Districts are also encouraged to pay for one additional couse each fall and spring.

Induction for New Principals - Alaska Administrator Coaching Project

The Alaska Administrator Coaching Program is extending their program as part of this grant to include coaching during the aspiring principal's UAA Internship.  ACCP has 9 coaches and the coaching services will be extended to last 3 years.  Coaching begins during internship and  continues during first 2 years of principalship.  We will try and keep people with the same coach for all three years.  There may be one coach for every two principal candidates during their internship, an excellent opportunity for additional interaction.

Additional professional development for aspiring and practicing principals willl be made available with Measured Progress (Assessment) and McREL (Balanced Leadership).  In the works for spring semester:  Webinars with Measured Progress and McREL that can be attended by any principal  administrator and teacher leaders from partner districts.

EED Role for Districts in Corrective Action

The grant is designed to enhance services to schools in need of improvement, and districts in corrective action.  It will augment  district opportunities for professional development and also enhance the skills of those at the Department who are working with districts in corrective action.  EED is looking to support teachers with strong school leaders and is supportive of methodologies to make sure that all EED projects are coordinating with each other.  A series of webinars and summer institutes are planned.

First RAPPS Activity:  Creating A Statewide Professional Learning Community

Results Now:  How We Can Achieve Unprecedented Improvement in Teaching and Learning

Join Dr. Mike Schmoker and Alaska Comprehensive Center staff for a series of six interactive webinars for school, district and state teams to discuss concepts and implement action steps designed to improve instruction in Alaska’s schools.

The webinars will support the focus of EED's January 15 and 16 Winter Conference, which features Dr. Schmoker as keynote speaker. This course is a combination guided book-study and interactive webinar series with Dr. Mike Schmoker, facilitated by Teri Regan and Gerry Briscoe, School Improvement Specialists from the Alaska Comprehensive Center. The course will include opportunities to collaborate with colleagues to improve results for all students.

Mike Schmoker, the author of Results Now, will present the brutal facts about the quality of instruction across the curriculum.  He will demonstrate that if student achievement is to improve, especially in the higher-order proficiencies, instruction will necessarily have to change and improve simultaneously.  He sets out a clear but simple agenda to achieve such transformation in Alaska’s schools.  Results Now should be required reading for administrators, teacher leaders and everyone interested in improving the quality of teaching and learning.

When:

  • Six (6) live, interactive webinar sessions 3:45-5:30 pm AST: Dec. 2 & 16; Jan. 27; Feb. 10 & 24; & March 10
  • Two (2) days at DEED Winter Conference in Anchorage Jan. 15, 16  (keynote speaker Dr. Mike Schmoker)

Cost:  There is no charge to participate.  There will be a charge of $90.00 if a participant wants to earn up to 2-credits.  Credits will be provided through University of Alaska, Southeast.  Final grade to be posted during Spring, 2009 session.

Credit Options:

2-credits for $90.00 through University of Alaska, SE – Attend 6 webinars and EED’s Winter Conference

1-credit for $90.00 through University of Alaska, SE - Attend the 6 webinar sessions – no Winter Conference (and complete requirements)

The webinars are free to those who want to participate, but do not want credit.

Questions on the amount of district support requested

Tuition for 12 credits is available per year, if districts can help (with travel or tuition costs) people can finish faster.

Suggested district support is $1,000 per Fall and Spring semester in tuition, and travel to the summer institue. (About $3,000 per year).

Students will need help with travel costs. Rooms are reserved at dorm so there is no charge for summer institute housing.  Districts could help with per diem and airfare.

If the district can match the grant by paying for one 3-credit class in the fall and spring (so that individuals can carry 6 hours per semester) they can finish in 2 years.

It is possible for students with with Masters degrees to finish in one year with extra tuition assistance.

How will classes be delivered?

We will use Blackboard and Elluminate for the distance courses + access to Webinars with Adobe Breeze.

When will notification/acceptances come out?

May be extra slots available as not all districts applying.  UAA will contact all nominees next week by phone and assist with filling out paperwork.  The goal is to have the nominees fully admitted by the end of December.

People who can not be accomodated in Year One could be admitted to UAA and start their course work to have priority for Year Two admissions. A new cohort will be selected each year for Years One Two and Three.

How can we confirm which of our staff are currently enrolled at UAA?

Susan Garton will contact district with that information within the week.
